Cutting edge reproductive procedure of Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection

This procedure allows us to fertilize an oocyte with only one single sperm cell. This is accomplished by maturing the oocyte until it has a polar body, purifying a sperm sample, injecting the sperm into the oocyte, culturing the injected egg until it divides (cleavage), culture in a controlled atmosphere of 5% O2, 5% CO2 and 90% N2 for 8 days. Once it becomes a blastocyst, it is transferred into a recipient mare transcervical like nonsurgical embryo transfer.

Transvaginal Aspiration

Transvaginal ultrasound guided aspiration of immature follicles in the mare allows collection of many oocytes (eggs) for ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection). Please note that flank aspirations are no longer performed. That process was the original method but today aspirations are performed transvaginally.
