Katrin Hinrichs, Professor and Patsy Link Chair in Mare Reproductive Studies at Texas A&M, cloned Copy Cat from genetic material harvested from High Brow Cat to create an exact reproductive replica. Copy Cat, foaled in 2013, has been labeled by scientists as being the “purest of equine clones” due to the unique process of his cloning.  An oocyte harvested from a maternal relative of High Brow Cat’s dam, Smart Little Kitty, is what sets the process apart from other cloned horses and raises such genetic integrity to a higher level.

Weatherford Equine’s Dr. Justin Ritthaler has overseen the breeding of High Brow Cat for the past 10 years. He was involved in the cloning process of High Brow Cat and will now oversee Copy Cat’s breeding as well. He believes the young sire to have great reproductive potential.

CAN COPY CAT’S FOALS BE REGISTERED?

The answer is yes. Copy Cat’s foals can be registered with the American DNA Registery. They cannot be registered with AQHA. This may be a setback for some, but only those who are heavily involved in AQHA events. There are no NCHA events that are limited to horses registered with AQHA except those produced by AQHA. Currently, Copy Cat is subscribed to the NCHA Super Stakes, the Breeder’s Invitational and the PCCHA Derby.

DOES COPY CAT HAVE ANY PERFORMANCE EARNINGS?

No. Copy Cat was started as a colt and ridden around the ranch, but he has not been trained in any specific discipline. He is 100 percent sound, extremely athletic and possesses a phenomenal disposition. However, Copy Cat has tremendous value as a breeding animal. The risk of putting him in training and possibly getting injured was too high for us to compromise his future as a breeding animal. Copy Cat’s value is in his DNA as a stallion. As a genetic replica of High Brow Cat, we anticipate that Copy Cat will pass on the same superior genetics as a producer. No time spent in the show pen will affect that outcome.

IS THERE ANYTHING WRONG WITH COPY CAT?

Absolutely not. We encourage everyone to visit Copy Cat at Weatherford Equine. Any assessments will attest that Copy Cat is a perfectly normal horse that has no (and has never had) any sort of developmental issues whatsoever. He is a stunning animal with superb conformation who carries many of the same personality traits as High Brow Cat. Furthermore, the process that created Copy Cat was the first of its kind for horses. The genetic integrity of Copy Cat is unsurpassed in the horse industry.

IS COPY CAT’S SEMEN AVAILABLE INTERNATIONALLY?

Yes! This is another aspect of Copy Cat’s career that we are excited about. Frozen semen is available to Australia and Canada for the 2017 breeding season. Because High Brow Cat’s semen has never been available outside of the U.S., we are seeing great interest in cutting enthusiasts globally.

WHAT IS COPY CAT’S STUD FEE?

Copy Cat’s stud fee for 2017 is $4,000. As a fraction of the cost of High Brow Cat’s, which is $22,500, this offers many High Brow Cat fans to benefit from his incredible genetics at a price point that is quite affordable.

Cloning has turned into a big business for Fort Worth's Alan Meeker, a polo enthusiast who founded Crestview Genetics. Meeker has worked with polo's all-time No.1 player, Adolfo Cambiaso, to clone some of the sport's best horses, including Cuartetera. Cambiaso has ridden clones of the great mare in the largest polo match, the Argentine Open, to victory in 2017 and 2016. Click the link to read more.
